Until recently, sleep was considered to be a passive process, an interruption of the mechanisms that keep us awake. Now we know otherwise: sleep is an active state in which there are hormonal, biochemical, metabolic and temperature changes that are essential for our daily activity.

Humans spend more than a third of their lives asleep. The prevalence of sleep disorders in the general population is approximately 35-35%.

Who has not had a bad night´s sleep?
Science and experience tell us that sleep is an absolute necessity for human beings.

The quality of our waking hours depends on the quality of our rest. The long-term repercussions of poor quality sleep are well known: sleepiness during the day, irritability, loss of memory, concentration difficulties, anxiety, depression, work accidents and a high rate of traffic accidents. Moreover, certain disorders, particularly Obstructive Sleep Apnea, affect the cardiovascular system resulting in arterial hypertension, cardiac arrhythmia, acute myocardial infarctions and strokes.

Sleep Medicine has developed significantly over the last 10 years. More than 80 sleep disorders have been recognised, most of which have effective treatments.
