Psyco-oncology

This is a speciality of Clinical Psychology, the purpose of which is to provide care for cancer patients and their families.

When a patient presents the disease, our psycho-oncologist provides support, guidance and company for the patient and his/her family from the beginning of diagnosis. The psycho-oncologist's role varies according to the different stages of the disease:

  • Diagnosis: helping the patient and his/her family to assimilate the emotions that the diagnosis of cancer can cause. Treatment in general: informing the patient and his/her family of the changes that the treatment will involve and helping him/her to recover his/her physical and mental health.
  • Palliative care: helping to manage pain and other symptoms, providing guidance and support for the carer and the family, and facing the prospect of death.
  • Grief: helping to face the different stages of the grieving process.
